Driving there

Your permit in St. Lucia

  • St. Lucia honors the International Driving Permit. The permit is a translation of your license into ten languages — it is not a license on its own.
  • Carry your valid U.S. driver's license with the permit at all times. The permit is valid for one year and only while your U.S. license is valid.
  • Rental companies and local police can be stricter than national law. Confirm the requirement with your rental company before you travel.

Advisory information is published by the U.S. Department of State and reproduced here for convenience. It can change at any time — always check the official advisory before you travel. USIDA does not issue travel advisories.

Before you drive

Top travel tips for St. Lucia

Road rules and mountain roads

Wear seat belts, keep left and give way to traffic already on roundabouts. On steep, narrow roads, approach blind bends slowly and use a low gear on long descents.

Tolls and parking

St. Lucia has no toll roads. Attraction admission and parking charges are separate; carry Eastern Caribbean dollars for small payments.

Fuel stops

Fill up around Castries, Gros Islet, Soufrière or Vieux Fort before exploring quieter roads. Many stations have attendants; confirm the fuel type and payment method before filling, and do not assume rural stations operate overnight.

Speed limits

Expect low limits, commonly 15–30 mph (24–48 km/h), with up to 40 mph (64 km/h) on some main roads. Follow posted signs and slow further for sharp bends, rain, pedestrians and roadside drainage channels.

Rentals and police checks

Bring your original home driving licence and IDP, and confirm with the rental company whether a local visitor driving permit is required for your documents. Check rental age restrictions and insurance exclusions; keep your driving documents and rental agreement available for police checks.
