Your permit in Andorra

  • Andorra honors the International Driving Permit. The permit is a translation of your license into ten languages — it is not a license on its own.
  • Carry your valid U.S. driver's license with the permit at all times. The permit is valid for one year and only while your U.S. license is valid.
  • Not party to the 1949 convention; the International Driving Permit is honored.
  • Rental companies and local police can be stricter than national law. Confirm the requirement with your rental company before you travel.

Before you drive

Top travel tips for Andorra

Road rules and winter equipment

Seat belts are compulsory, and handheld phone use while driving is prohibited. From 1 November to 15 May, ensure you have suitable winter tires or correctly sized snow chains; fit chains when conditions or signs require them.

Tolls and the French approach

Most roads are toll-free. The Envalira Tunnel, near Pas de la Casa, charges a toll and avoids the high Envalira Pass; the pass is an alternative only when open and conditions are suitable. Approach routes through Spain or France may also have tolls.

Fuel

Petrol and diesel are widely available along the main valley roads and are often cheaper than in neighboring France and Spain. Fill up before exploring higher mountain roads, where stations are sparse, and check opening hours rather than assuming overnight service.

Speed limits

Limits are generally 40 km/h in built-up areas and up to 90 km/h outside them, but many stretches have lower posted limits. Follow signs closely, particularly through villages, tunnels and sharp bends; there are no motorways in Andorra.

Rentals and police checks

Carry your original valid driver's license, International Driving Permit, passport, vehicle registration and insurance documents. An IDP does not replace your license. If renting in Spain or France, obtain permission to enter Andorra and confirm that insurance, roadside assistance and winter equipment cover your itinerary; have the rental agreement available for police or border checks.
